{Step-by-Step Sewing} The EASIEST Fabric Gift Bag

10:26 am

Long time no post but I'm back! and I must still be in the festive spirit because I stumbled across this adorable Fabric Gift Bag and felt compelled to get the camera out (after FOUR MONTHS - sorry about that!) and create a tutorial for you all.

The original post can be found HERE but shared only photos. I thought I'd put together the step-by-step written instructions and video tutorial to match so, here we go.

Here's what you'll need:
Fabric Scissors or Pinking Shears
Interior and Exterior Piece of Cotton each sized 10" x 10" (25.5cm x 25.5cm)
2x Lengths of Ribbon, Rope or Thread each sized 22" (55cm) in length
Safety Pins
Cotton and Bobbin Thread
Sewing Machine
Ruler
Iron and Ironing surface

Steps:

  • Place one of your fabrics right side up on your work surface
  • On top of this, place your second piece, right side down (The prints should both be on the inside of your fabric sandwich)
  • Pin these two pieces together and sew around the outside edge using your sewing machine footer as your guide, leaving a small gap to turn the fabrics the right way out
  • Carefully snip each corner off, turn the right way out and iron flat
  • Next, sew around the entire outside edge as close to the edge as possible
  • Fold each corner into the centre of your square with the edges of each corner measuring 3.5" and pin in place. (The fabric you choose to fold in will appear as the petals on the final fabric bag)
  • Next you want to sew around the entire outside edge again with a seam allowance wide enough to accommodate your chosen ribbon or tie
  • Safety pin through one end of your ribbon and use this to push the ribbon through the seam your have just created on each petal and exiting back out the same side you started from. When the ribbon exits, pin through both ends to secure
  • Repeat with the second piece of ribbon starting and exiting from the opposite end
  • Flip your fabric over and pull your ribbon ends taught
  • Remove the pins and tie a knot in your ribbon. For waxed thread you can scorch the ends to prevent unravveling
When open, the fabric bag is large enough for an adult sized bangle or gift of a similar width. Tie a lovely bow on top and people will be so impressed with your handmade gift bag that actually, took no time at all!
